Prolonged periods of hot weather combined with a lack of rain is bad news for the thatching industry.
The supplies of straw of a suitable quality and height have been in reduced availability for a couple of years. Some regions are worst hit than others.
This is a straw field as seen in early July 2026, during the dry hot weather. It is very short and far too short to be harvested for thatching.
The straw harvest for 2026 does not currently look like it will be a good one.
Anticipate supply shortages and rising costs… 2027 is likely to be impacted too.
