The rafters seem to be from slender tree branches and are very fragile now having been eaten by beetles and have little residual strength remaining. The entire roof has been encapsulated by a newer C20 roof – albeit now with asbestos tiles and not thatch. This work was done before the house was Listed and it is not known whether it was a conservation decision to protect the original roof.
