It is well known that historic bricks are porous and will absorb moisture. For this sample of broken brick, which is from Winchelsea and dates to the mid 1600’s, I am seeing how long it takes to allow moisture to penetrate through the two lime mortar joints from the bottom to the top. At the time of doing this message it has taken 76 hours. The lime mortar seems to be quite hard and resisted the moisture initially. It is a very interesting little experiment. It continues…..
