Michelangelo and La Capella Sistina: A Masterpiece Revealed
In 1505, the Florentine sculptor Michelangelo Buonarroti was summoned to Rome by Pope Julius II to discuss the commission of a tomb.
The tomb wasn’t to be completed for over 40 years and Michelangelo’s attention was instead put towards the creation of the one of the greatest, and largest, works of art the world has ever seen. Painted in two stages between 1508 and 1512, the frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel are astonishing in both their scale and detail. This lecture tells the story of the ceiling and shows in very close detail just why it is still admired by visitors after 500 years.
