George Gilbert Scott was an eminent Victorian architect and he is responsible for, among others, the hotel at St.Pancras station and the Albert Memorial. The grand staircase at the hotel is really something to see. It is breathtakingly gorgeous and it is hard to understand today how as recently as the 1960’s the building had fallen into disrepair and was even at risk of demolition. It was saved through a public campaign lead by conservationists of the time and has been subsequently repaired and presented once again to its former glory.
It is a vivid example of how opinions change. There is a catalogue of comparable buildings that have been demolished.
