Just as with bricks and stonework, it is important that chalk block walls use a soft lime mortar and NOT a cement mortar which is seen in these photos.
Severe frost damage is an unavoidable consequence when cement is used with these soft and porous blocks. Long-term, the only option is to carefully remove the cement.
